Human Potential requires moving beyond the traditional focus of Psychology- the attempt to move the dysfunctional to functional. Beyond functional, beyond “normal,” is a tremendous variety of experiences. The peak of these experiences is beyond the identification of the self, the personal. It is the transpersonal, consciousness beyond the identification with an idea of who we are.
The transpersonal has been traditionally approached through religion. Recently psychology has been turned onto the potential beyond the conditioned self. UWG psychology includes the transpersonal approach as one of the major perspectives offered by the department, along with humanistic and “critical.”
