Thinking about attending a  PhD program?   If so you might be looking beyond West Georgia.  It is common to apply to as many as 10 PhD programs, as selection is so competitive, especially for the clinical ones at large universities.  There are Clinical Psychology PhDs and PsyDs and Counseling Psychology programs (often in the education departments)  for those who wish to practice, and then there are the non-clinical PhDs (like ours).

Here are some other programs that may be of interest to you.

Feel free to edit and add to the information below- it is a work in progress.

Duquesnse University – Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology- Currently Duquesne’s Department of Psychology offers a combined M.A./Ph.D. program in Clinical Psychology. This is considered one of the more relevant clinical programs within humanistic, existential, phenomenological circles.  Several of our professors, including Alan and Chris, did their doctoral work here.

Fordham University -counseling psychology program, whose faculty includes Amelio D’Onofrio- existential approach. The clinical psychology program also has Frederick Wertz who is heavily into existentialism, phenomenology, etc.

University of Detroit Mercy, Clinical Psychology – The whole department has a psychodynamic foundation. In particular, Barry Dauphin’s works are very philosophical in nature.

Arizona State University, Counseling Psychology – Richard Kinnier’s interests include value theory, humanistic/existentialist psychology, etc

University of Tennessee Knoxville, Counseling Psychology – Mark Hector does a lot of phenomenology stuff.

University of West Georgia, EdD in Professional Counseling and Supervision – in our Education Department, requires an LPC to apply, check it out here.

Alternative learning centers:

Institute of Transpersonal Psychology– offerings PsyDs in Clinical Psychology and Phds in Transpersonal.   As with the next private schools, the funding options are reportedly more limited and the admissions more liberal.

California Institute of Integral Studies- PsyD Clinical, and PhD programs in “East West Psychology” and “Philosophy, Cosmology, and Consciousness.”

John F. Kennedy University– Clinical PsyD

Saybrook University– Clinical PsyD, and PhD options.

Naropa University– Does NOT offer any doctoral degrees, yet has some very interesting master’s degrees including an MA in Contemplative Education,  Transpersonal Counseling Psychology with concentrations in Art Therapy, Wilderness Therapy and Counseling Psychology,  Somatic Counseling Psychology with concentrations in Body Psychotherapy and Dance/Movement Therapy, and Contemplative Psychotherapy.
